Genichiro, Way of Tomoe(巴流葦名弦一郎,School of Tomoe Ashina Genichiro)is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This page refers to the naming change for the Genichiro Ashina boss fight, that happens after he enters his second phase. Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as "Immortality Severed" or "Shinobi Execution". You will need to perform multiple Deathblows on them in order to defeat them, and filling their Posture Gauge is the only way to accomplish this. However, decreasing their health will make it so their Posture Gauge depletes more slowly, assisting you in accomplishing this feat.

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Location

  • Ashina Castle: At the very top of the castle, after the Ashina Dojo Idol. After you defeat him, Genichiro will remove his armor and transform into this form. This is not an optional boss, as players must defeat him to progress in the game.
  • Ashina Reservoir: Only met if you "Choose to Serve Kuro" when questioned by Owl on top of Ashina Castle. He is the door boss to the Isshin, the Sword Saint fight. There is no checkpoint between him and Isshin; if killed by either of them, you will have to fight Genichiro once again.
  • Featured boss in the Gauntlet of Strength: Severance.

Strategy Write-Up

After depleting Genichiro Ashina's health bars on the top of Ashina Castle, he will take off his armor and become more maneuverable--but he will switch to being primarily concerned with offense and stop defending himself as much. He gains some lightning-charged attacks which can be used against him with the Redirect Lightning skill. If they do hit, they may well one-shot you. He still keeps his bow but he uses it less often. He has a thrust attack where he leaps into the air and launches himself at you sword-first; use a Mikiri Counter when he does this and be sure to punish. Genichiro will swipe 5 times at the player, which the player can avoid using timed Deflects or correctly timed evasions. The swipes cover three quarters of Genichiro's surrounding area--the only open spot to attack is his back left. When he strikes, he will not stop until all 5 swipes are complete.

Sticking close and doing normal attacks, then deflecting once when he parries you (deeper sound), then keep normal swinging. The difference between this Genichiro and the previous armored version is that this one has no super armor on his moves any more. Hitting with a normal attack will knock him out of any aerobatics. Cornering him until his posture breaks is a relatively straightforward way to finish the fight. His offense is a bit intimidating at first but his reduced defense, vulnerability to a lightning reversal, and his aggressiveness will see you through. If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "SHINOBI EXECUTION" upon the screen.

During the final encounter at the end of the game, Genichiro will not use any lightning-charged attacks, due to wielding the second Mortal blade. Aside from the huge swings with the Mortal blade, you can easily dodge Genichiro's blows and gets hits in to stagger him. Exploit the usage of Mikiri counter to further trivalize Genichiro. He has only one vitality bar, and as soon as the deathblow is landed, a cutscene will begin and the fight will transition into the Isshin, the Sword Saint encounter.

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Notes & Trivia

  • When Genichiro "revives" after you first defeat him atop Ashina Castle, one can see that he has become a "Red Eye," type entity--which both the physician Doujun and his master Dosaku are researching in their quest to attain immortality.

  • The blackened portions of Genichiro's body, which are mostly located across his arms and shoulders, are most likely remnants of his training to master the "Lightning of Tomoe," as they correspond to exactly where he channels lightning during his electricity-based attacks.

Poor bastard. Each of his fights is gloriously fun, but he's such a pushover. I guess that's understandable, given that a weaker Tomoe phase is attached to the final boss of the game, but still, I kind of wish Genichiro and Isshin were separate bosses. Maybe a 3-phase Geni with lightning, mortal blade, and finally both movesets?

Actually, that's probably the highest praise I can give this boss. He's so fun to fight that it just comes to you naturally, and he feels incredibly easy as a result. From absolutely nailed it with him and Isshin.

im new to sekiro, just got to genishro ashina, the only thing i dont like about this game so far is that i have to kill ashina AND THEN go back to way of tomoe, and this makes the fight more tedious, other than that, great game!
(also im nervous about the ape gank later on in the game lol)

By the 80th time you reach isshin, genichiro is so easy its like he’s fighting you at ng+7 charmless bell demon 1 attack power 1 vitality.

"Oh no! That bastard is drinking from a gourd! I'm gonna try my jumping thrust attack, like i did for 7 times in a row but to no avail!"

When does Lightning Genichiro become unlocked after killing Owl? Every time i try going to the Silvergrass field area, it tells me that the door there is locked.
I've defeated Owl, but haven't yet defeated Owl (Father) or gone to the Fountainhead Palace yet.

He has a grand total of... let’s see, 2 death lows when you first encounter him, 3 in ashina castle, and one more in the final battle before isshin. 6 healthbars. And divine dragon, a literal god has 1. What???

I had finally beaten phase 1, and gotten phase 2’s posture built up very much near full and I hit jump instead of dodge and got impaled by a perilous thrust, and that was it for me. My instinct keeps reverting back to Nioh 1 and 2 so I keep jumping instead of dodging. I beat Lady Butterfly but Genichiro and that Seven Spears guy at the reservoir mess me up.

Because theres on the Mortal blade attack here: Just walk behind him, he takes ages too charge and hes completely open from behind

Took a while to beat his first phase (which is 2 *****ing health bars) only for him to have another phase, ugh. The fight was cool and all but god damn, can I breathe please

The method that finally worked for me was to save all my Spirit Emblems for the lightning phase, and then spam Shadowrush on him (till out of Emblems) during an opening to bring his health down quite a bit so his Posture regen slows down. Other Tips: 1. Spam block rapidly whenever he attacks. 2. Jump diagonally backwards soon as red symbol appears for perilous attacks, unless you're confident that you can counter them. The exception would be his grab attack: dodge backwards and then do a charged attack to do a fair amount of vitality damage. 3. Sometimes you can get in a swing to do vitality damage, but only one, and be ready to block/deflect afterwards. It helps a lot to get his health down 50% because then his posture regen is slowed to a crawl. 4. During lightning phase when he's doing a lightning attack, don't jump to early. Wait a moment and then jump to either avoid or get charged so you can do a lightning reflect attack.

They should let you play as him in a story dlc of how he obtained the Black Mortal Blade. Using his sword and bow would be really cool, even have some new skill tree of bow skills.

It seems he has different dialogues. after I defeated him in ashina reservoir, after " I was powerless, but ..." once he said "grandfather was not. the dragon blood ...." and another time on NG+ he said "Ashina will rise once more ..." (sorry I don't remember it very well). Is it random or it depends on something?

So he’s not immortal in the sense that Sekiro is, it’s just that the Rejuvenating Sediment allows him to survive more lethal attacks (like Sekiro’s deathblow). And as I believe one of the rosaries illustrates, Red Eyes are the result of failed ambitions, hence why they flash momentarily in Genichiro, but dissipate later when he acquires the second Mortal Blade.

So, I'm thinking Tomoe was an Okami warrior? As described by Isshin, Genchiro's mentor was a woman and appeared to be dancing as she fought with her sword, like the floating passage art. Genchiro's "The Way of Tomoe" style also utilizes lighting, which seems to be a technique from the Okami fountainhead warriors, as they are the only ones other than him (and SS Isshin, but this could be a consequence of being brought back through Genchiro's body, since no where else does he demonstrate such an ability) who are shown using such a technique.

"Genichiro Way Of Tomoe will strip completely naked with only his katana and samurai headgear" ... wtf...... Ok fine, gave me a little chuckle.

I thought his red eyes would have some more relevance. He doesn't seem more stagger resistant, as the red lump description would suggest, but he -does- only has 1 health bar after obtaining the red eyes. Could be loosely connected with the prohibiting resurrection thing, but his way of tomoe form already only had 1 bar.

the easiest boss i ever met.i beat him in my 3rd try. lady butterfly killed me over 30 times , the chained ogre more than 15 times. i killed him spamming in the 1st phase shadow rush till there were no more other spirit emblems . at his 2nd phase i spammed also 3-4 times shadow rush just to close the distance and to make some vitality damage. i always was blocking his bow attacks . and then 1 hit 1 parry 1 hit one parry. every time he swang his sword over his head i was tapping L1 to parry so i beat his posture bar. at the 3rd time keep the pressure a lot . dont let him go away . always hit 1-2 times and then parry , his posture bar fills quickly. then you got the win !

best way to kill him is trowing the lighting against him with the R1/RB button after get hit by the massive lighting attack. (you must be hit in air to counter the lighting atk)

                                        • Anonymous

When he does any of his lightning attacks, jump up towards him and attack when he does, you'll grab the lightning, stun him and deal massive vitality dmg.

                                          • This is for the guys who suck at deflecting\parrying like me :D You can cheese this boss with Shadowrush in the first phase. In the second phate attack only when jumps at you. 1) The safest way to finish the first phase is to use Shadowrush skill. When he tries to hit you jump+block to the left. In the video, I *****ed up several times but in general, even a gamer who suck at this game (like yours truly) can finish the first phase without taking any (or very little) damage 2) The safest way to get through the second phase is to bait his jumping attack and hit him once (the second hit will be blocked) then jump away. Rinse and repeat. If he runs, instead of jumping, towards you then most likely after you have deflected\blocked his attacks he'll try to fry your ass with lightning, so move away really fast. If you can consistently( this is the key, coz failing to deflect this attack will cause MASSIVE damage so sometimes one hit is all it takes to get killed) deflect lightning then it's the fastest way to kill him. PS Sorry for the video artifacts here and there in the second phase..
