Gyoubu Oniwa (鬼庭刑部雅孝, Oniwa Gyoubu Masataka) is a required Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This Sekiro Gyobu Oniwa Boss Guide gives you strategies on how to beat Gyobu easily, as well as tips, tricks and lore notes. Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa, also known as Gyoubu the Demon (鬼刑部, Demon Gyoubu), is found in the Ashina Outskirts Castle Gate Fortress, and was originally revealed during one of the first trailers of the game, although the name was not known at the time. Gyoubu has 2 health bars that must be removed before a finisher deathblow can be performed.
The weapon he uses is a long spear known as a Yari, specifically Katakama-yari (片鎌槍).
Gyoubu can be killed by using what is called "Gyoubu skip" - this method is not the intended way of killing him but if you want an additional challenge in new cycles researching how to do this might provide some entertainment.

Where to find Gyobu in Sekiro?
- Gyoubu Oniwa is found at the very end of Ashina Outskirts in a large arena, just past the Ashina Castle Gate Fortress Sculptor's Idol.
- This boss is not optional. He must be defeated to advance the story.

- Pro tip: How to beat Gyobu easily? Bring Firefrackers!
This boss is very aggressive and the strategy for him is not difficult. The weakness of this boss is Shinobi Firecracker; you can learn that beasts are easily startled by eavesdropping on the soldier mourning over his dead horse Kokage in the Castle Gate Fortress. When Gyoubu Oniwa approaches, you can use the Shinobi Firecracker to stun his horse dealing a large amount of posture damage leaving him vulnerable to attacks for a short time.
You want to stay as close to him as you can, generally, and deflect as many attacks as you can. Deflecting his attacks will fill his Posture Gauge very quickly. Even if you miss time some of your deflects and are Posture Broken, you will still be fine because he rarely strikes when this occurs. Just keep deflecting and blocking and you'll get him down easy.
When he starts galloping away, sprint after him and use your Grappling Hook in order to pull yourself back to him rapidly. These attacks are much harder to deal with if you do not do this, so be sure to grapple whenever you can.
If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "SHINOBI EXECUTION" upon the screen.

The first attack is easily deflected, the second one is very fast and can be deflected, but is more worth blocking. The final overhead is also easily deflected, and if deflected will cause Gyuobu to stagger. |
| Charging Ground Sweep | Gyoubu will charge in a circle, dragging his spear along the ground. This attack is perilous and cannot be blocked, thus it is best to jump over it. It can start very unexpectedly, and catch you off guard. This attack most commonly occurs after his "triple hit charge", but can happen at any time. Can be grappled to. |

| Triple Hit Charge | Gyoubu will charge at you, keeping his spear in line with his horse. The spear will hit three times, and is moderately hard to deflect. If you block this attack, it is likely to break your posture, but Gyoubu rarely capitalises on this, making it a decent option. |
| Detaching Sweep | Gyoubu will do this when far away from the player. The tip of his spear will detach, and he will swing it round in a wide circle on the end of a rope three times. It can be both blocked and deflected. Unlike most ranged attacks in sekiro, deflecting this will damage gyuobu's posture. Gyuobu can be grappled to while performing this attack. |
| Late Charge | This attack is hard to see coming, but once you know what happens, is easy to deflect. Gyoubu will charge at you, holding his spear upright, seemingly just moving around. He will charge slightly past you, then flick his spear back to hit you once. |
| Concealed Flick | If you are on Gyoubu's right flank, he may do an upwards flick of his spear, similar looking to the start of his charge sweep. This attack is hard to forsee, and he will most likely do it if you nullified his standard combo. After doing this attack, he usually charges off and does either his stationary or charging sweep, so be ready to sprint and grapple for easy damage. |
| Jumping Attack | The horse will leap straight up into the air, with Gyoubu bringing his spear down as he lands. He will do this twice. While it's tempting to try and avoid the attack by dodging, standing your ground and deflecting the spear will deal a large amount of posture damage to him. |
| Detaching Thrust | Gyuobo will detach his spear head from the shaft and launch it forward on a rope with a thrust. Despite the thrusting motion of the attack it can not be Mikiri countered, however, it can be deflected. |

Gyoubu Oniwa Lore
"As I breathe, you will not pass the castle gate"
- Gyoubu was taken in as an Ashina warrior after his group of infamous bandits were defeated by Isshin. He eventually became Genichiro's most trusted retainer.
- The spear he uses against Sekiro was previously owned by the samurai Shuzen Tamura, who Isshin defeats in battle during the game's opening cutscene. Isshin gifted the spear to Gyoubu after his horn-spear broke during the rebellion.
- It's possible he is one of the Seven Ashina Spears, as he is a high-ranking warrior and uses a unique spear in battle.
- He is most likely based on Yoshinao Oniniwa and/or his son Tsunamoto Oniniwa (or Moniwa), two of the greatest generals of the major daimyo warlord Masamune Date. Oniniwa in history and Oniwa in Sekiro have the same kanji characters 鬼庭.
- Like Gyoubu, Yoshinao was a formidable warrior even in his later years. At the age of 73, he command an army at the front-line and killed many enemies.
- In Japanese, the clan name Oniwa or Oniniwa (鬼庭) roughly translates to "the garden of demons." This is why Gyoubu is referred to in the English dub as "Gyoubu the Demon" in an eavesdrop conversation.
- His character can be also inspired by Yukimura Sanada (真田 幸村), a Japanese samurai warrior of the Sengoku period. He was especially known as the leading general on the defending side of the Siege of Osaka. He rode a horse during battle, same antler helmet, used the same long spear (Yari), has the same 前立て (crest) design. He may also be inspired another famous samurai by Tadakatsu Honda (本多 忠勝) but the 前立て (crest) does not match.
- Gyoubu's true personal name is Masataka (雅孝), according to the Japanese version. In feudal Japan, a personal name is rarely used in order to address an upper-class person, since doing so is considered very rude. Instead, court titles like "Gyoubu" are virtually used as personal names.
- "Gyoubu" was a historical Japanese court title given to members of the Ministry of Justice. In the Sengoku and Edo periods, even samurai who do not have the position in the Court used this title as their false personal names. The title was most famously held by the historical "Gyoubu" Yoshitsugu Otani (大谷 吉継), a 16th century samurai and ally of Mitsunari Ishida (石田 三成).
- Gyoubu's horse is named Onikage (鬼鹿毛), translating from Japanese as "Demon-like Bay Horse".
- There are two famous legends for Onikage in Japan.
- Oguri-Hangan, a mythical person in medieval Japan, is said to tame a man-eating horse called Onikage.
- Nobutora Takeda, the father of Shingen Takeda (one of the two strongest warlords in the Sengoku period, along with Kenshin Uesugi), also had a great horse called Onikage.
- It may be also a self-homage to the previous products of FromSoftware. A demonic ninja named Onikage (鬼陰, "Demonic Shade") is one of the primary recurring antagonists in the Tenchu series.

- As the fight begins, Gyoubu will take some time to introduce himself, leaving him momentarily vulnerable to attack. Doing this will cause him to abruptly stop his introduction, and speak the line "Move in haste and die, brat"

This is the first real boss? This guy is super easy. Easier than the drunkard, who took me a dozen attempts, and easier than lady butterfly, who I've still not defeated after half an hour of trying. I took this dude down on my second attempt. Just stay in his face and parry, you can even parry the horse jumping on top of you. I ran away from the perilous attack and threw the occasional shuriken to keep the poise meter up while he was riding around.
Tree Sentinel, the Hushed Saint from the new LotF, and even Parade Master in lies of peepee are harder than this dude. He's cooler than all of them though.

It's hard to shake off the Souls, but only his 危 attack is unblockable. Every other big intimidating sweep that hits the bass frequencies of your audio and shakes the screen and distorts the air CAN be 100% blocked for free, and his horse has no trampling effect as it moves around. So hug him

He isn’t a difficult boss once you’ve beaten him, but it’s always a fun one. Main tip I can say aside from Firecrackers help is to always take advantage of the grapple hook opportunities, and try to learn to deflect his spear because that can build up posture. Getting under and behind him is also easy to do

Discovered a little tidbit while making some videos. After killing Owl, the area after the Ashina Gate Idol, i.e. the Outer Keep, becomes closed off. If you use the Gyoubu skip to bypass it, you'll find all the enemies normally there are now gone.

He seems to be resistant or immune to fire crackers when he is charging,mid attack and such (I could not get his horse to startle once after I got the intial)

Gyobu skip has been patched out as of 1/3/20. You can't get high enough to reach the top of the wooden tower and Gyobu destroys it immediately if you try

My name is Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa. I'm 33 years old. My pagoda is in the northeast section of Ashina, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as a gate guardian for the Ashina Castle, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm sake and doing about twenty minutes of horse-riding before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last battle. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself by not letting anyone pass through the castle gate like a Shinobi, that would cause me to lose my breath during battle. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Therefore, as I live and breathe, you will not pass the castle gate!

Actually, from what I can find, "Oniwa" does seem to be a legitimate Japanese surname. Also, the manga confirms that he was indeed the Ashina's Minister of Justice (and refers to him as "Oniwa Masataka" [Eastern naming order]), so we can pretty safely assume that "Gyoubu" is indeed just a title.

It may just be me, but it seems like he is much more aggressive if you attack during his introduction compared to if you listen through.

The fact that he has the mechanical barrel means it was used in the mechanism that allowed him to throw his spear and retrieve it via rope line. Seeing as he is super proficient at using Tamura's cross-blade spear, the weapon was probably outfitted with the mechanical barrel already when it was awarded to him by Isshin. This means that some time after Isshin killed Shuzen Tamura, Isshin tore off the mechanical barrel from Sekijou's prosthetic. This means Sekijou has been the Busshi of Aredera for at least 20 years.

Well Something have they patched because now his almost immune in phase 2 against firecracker. And he does attacks that dont show up in video and its much harder now
Who else aint no noob and killed Gyobu without firecrackers on the first try? Shadows die twice? Not even once ;)

Can the perilous spear thrust be mikiri countered? It's the one where the spear is thrown like a javelin and pulled back by the rope.

After beating Lady Butterfly this guy was a total joke of a boss. Fire Crackers and the grapple attack obliterates his posture, I felt kinda disappointed.

I don't know if it's only in phase 2, but I had Gyoubu do an attack I don't think is listed (I've just added it to his list of attacks) where the horse just jumps straight into the air with Gyoubu attacking as he lands (he then did the same move a second time). Deflecting it did pretty large posture damage to him.

His horse sort of nudges you slightly as you're sitting there stabbing Gyoubu, as if to say "get away from him". Kinda sad :(

Weird that it's set up that horses are afraid of loud noises right before, but then you get the firecrackers after.. smells of cut content

I've struggled with jozou and yamauchi tenzen but this was fairly easy. I'm stuck at lady butterfly and the headless crazy in the cave at the mountains. I came here to learn if he is the first boss thats why the fight was easy...seems not

Much easier than some of the minibosses. I struggled against Juzou the Drunkard or the Chained Ogre, but beat him first try.
They might as well combine the 'mini-boss' and 'boss' sections into one. The 'mini-boss' sounds like it'll be just a bump on the road. First real one, one shot god ogre with a massive health bar :D
