Sekiro Lone Shadow Vilehand Strategy Writeup
Vilehand is accompanied by a purple assassin to the left of the entrance. As such, it is advised that you to stealth walk behind the assassin on your left and backstab him, greatly easing the difficulty of this battle. Additionally, one can use the puppeteer ninjutsu on the assassin, during which you (and your puppet) can deal a great amount of damage to Vilehand while he is distracted.
Puppeteer strategy
A way to beat this miniboss very easily is with the puppeteer ninjitsu. simply use it on the enemy in the same room as Vilehand and then attack him in the back while he's distracted by the enemy. then run away until the other enemy attacks him again, then hit him in the back again, repeat this and you'll easily deal a lot of damage to Vilehand. if you want to do this the entire fight, just backstab and use the Ninjutsu technique on the enemy every now and then to fully heal him. this makes Vilehand incredibly easy, and you'll be able to kill him without even deflecting a single attack.Running in circle strategy
Another way to beat him is to run in circle until he tries to hit you. Since Wolf is running faster, you are able to hit him after each one of his attempts with a swinging blow from behind.Sekiro Lone Shadow Vilehand Attacks & Counters

Since no one else has mentioned it yet, this guy is insanely weak to fire. If you have Living Force you can basically just use it and spam attacks until he dies, otherwise oil and flame vent will give a massive opening

This game is dishing out unfair ganks like they grow it. I’m just tryna fight owl:/

not sure if anyone didn't figure this out yet, but you can just sneak in stealth and kill the other guy before the fight even starts.

This is such a terrible arena for his fight. It's such a small and cluttered room for such an agile enemy and the low hanging ceiling just screws with your camera when you jump to doge his sweeps
- Anonymous
hes EASY to beat without the other distraction. you can Puppeteer the other one but just stand aside and be busy with your buffs and heal and all that.
no need to extend the puppet duration you are wasting spirit emblems.
just watch them kill each other then when the puppet dies its your turn. its easier this way without the puppet distracting your auto target.

They're on the right side. I got caught sneaking and died because of this error.

Don't be discouraged from trying to fight both Shadows at once, that's not really as Impossible as it might during the first few attempts. If you don't stand right between them but instead create some space, they take turns attacking much more often than attack both at once. Sometimes one of them would just walk around doing mostly nothing.
Some easy opportunities for attacking might be thrusting at a Shadow during his kick combo, throwing shuriken when they jump or using weapon arts in the air after dodging a sweep.

I found a way to cheese this fight, you just need the ceremonial tanto. you start off by puppeting the enemy on the left and every so often backstab the purple guy, not the boss, and press r1 after backstabbing again, this reseted the puppet timer so I managed to have my puppet fight the whole battle for me. If you run out of spirit totems just use the item above to get enough for another puppet ninjutsu. Stay out of the way of them fighting, just do thrust attacks from a distance

Ha! This guy ganked me the first time so I came back and ganked him; that's poetic justice.

I tried cheesing this guy with a puppet and eventually took down one of his bars. After that he went to the far left of the arena and completely vanished. I thought to myself that maybe that's how the fight was supposed to play out (this is my 1st playthrough) especially since the music stopped. After a bit he suddenly reappeared in the same zone of the arena but now with 2 health bars instead of 1. Luckly I somehow managed to beat him still but that was complete bs. I don't even know if that's a bug or actually intended.

For those of you who invade in dark souls...
Every boss with two enemies in this game feels like a host with phantoms. Remember that the next time you summon phantoms as someone invades you. Please git gud people, and don't let others beat your battles for you. Thanks.

The original Japanese name is actually "Forbidden hand". Also some people joked about his title being "Lone shadow" and he is not alone. The orignal Japanese title is "Long shadow Sect", so it's the name of the group.
I lured 6 Ashina samurai into Vilehand's chamber before entering. They beat the crap out of him. I just had to wade in to perform the 2 deathblows between running away from samurai who lost focus on their mission.

Accidentally rushed in and fought both of them. Still won, first try ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Get the first deathblow by use of pupeteer ninjutsu. Then fry the bastard with oil and flame vent, three times. Finish him with a 2 or 3 combos. Job done
- Anonymous
U can also just spam mortal blade and doge left after assassinating the purple guy u deal good damage with it and usually don’t get hit while doing so since the mortal blade has better range than him

You can make this fight very easy if you’re struggling, take out the other guy that’s in the room first. Save and quit as the boss fight starts, then when you load back in sneak attack the vilehand. Proceed to run around the room and bate his poison fist attack, don’t stop running for a second, as soon as he does his fist attack hit him then continue to run around the room and wait for the opening.

The guided video has you entering the room from the inside; how do you get in there?

I did some research On vilehand. It turns out that his name in Japanese roughly translates to “wipes with left”. During this time there was no toilet paper, which means his poison attack is actually him wiping feces on Sekiro and poisoning him with E-coli.
- Anonymous
I saw distortion2 do a speed run where he killed the extra ninja in the room, quit game and then you can sneak up and take one of his deathblows, this is easier than using puppeteer in my opinion.

This boss respawned for me. Has anyone else experienced this bug?
Apart from the puppeteer ninjitsu, the easiest way to beat him without any damage is to run in circle. He's very quick, but he won't run as quick as you would. You just run in circle, and when he tries to hit you, you punish him with a swinging blow from behind.
- Anonymous
So, I've been trying to poison him with Sabimaru, and while I'm not confident of this, it seems he's either immune or very resistant to poison. Can anyone confirm?
- Anonymous
If you keep dodging to the right (around *his* left), he basically can't hit you with most of his attacks. Since all of his leg attacks are from his right leg. You might even catch him with a Mikiri Counter when doing this. Luckily his arena is large enough to make this a fairly simple way of taking him down once you get the timing. I suspect you could do this with all the Lone Shadows, but most of them are in smaller arenas, at least that I've seen.

Weakness: High Monk. Use it during his sweep attack and you’ll knock out more than half of his posture. (This works for like, every sweep attack in the game.)

I dont think im the only one for whom this guy didnt appear for. Could it be because he's the same guy that was guarding the mist raven, and he was already killed in hirata estate? He actually fell off the cliff for me. It's certainly a more interesting explanation than just a bug

His Weakness Is Firecrackers And Fistful of Ash Just throw one and go to his back and hit and repeat

I beat him by puppeteering his friend and once I felt like the effect was going to end/he was going to die, I backstabbed the puppet again to refresh the Pupeteer ability which also heals the puppet to the full. I also aided the puppet by attacking the Vilehand from behind. Went quite swiftly and the boss died without killing either of us.

It seems like the Puppeteer is the intended way to fight this boss. It’s actually beautiful in a way, his friend so quickly becomes his foe. He is truly the Lone Shadow Vilehand

If you have bestowal ninjutsu use that on another guy and the fight is gonna be easy as pie. Just spam r1 and he will die even before the buff run out
- Anonymous
once you beat this guy, you can just rest and then go and backstab the purple guy and rest again over and over. he gives like 300 something xp every time. easy way to grind xp if you were so inclined.

if he didnt gank me, I would give mad respect to him. This motherfecker only has one arm and still kicks ass

Easy strategy is to execute and puppet the guy on the left. You want to stay far from the right keeping your ally far on the left and the boss in the middle like a triangle. If you do this properly you should get aggro and the puppet should hit and the aggro will switch from you and him constantly. You only will get one or two hits in each time and let your friend hit and get aggro. At some point if you are playing aggressive enough you might get a knockdown or finish him to execute the first phase. if you puppet your friend again he should survive the a lot of the 2nd phase with the same strategy. Mind you my run went well where the puppet never got hit and the boss was constantly being stunned or deflected so it went quick. I used one gourd seed (estus) and I didn't even need to. TLDR: Puppet the guy on the left, stay to the right of the boss switching aggro with the puppet. Backstab and puppet your ally again at end of phase one and use same strategy for same 2.

When ninjutsu puppeteer is about to end, you can perform another backstab and reset the timer by using another ninjutsu on him.
- Anonymous
Tip: Execute the guy on left side then quit the game to main menu, load back to the game, after that you will be able to do one sneak deathblow on mini-boss.
- Anonymous
Easy-ish strat: Sneak into the room, hug the left wall. Sneak deathblow the one-arm ninja dude, and use Puppeteer Ninjutsu. Try and stay behind Lone Shadow, whittling down his posture before you can deathblow. At this point, the purple dude will die, so just prepare to spam parry. Got him on 2nd try

He is called lone shadow yet there is another purple assassin with him. Fromsoft need to change his title for Ganker Shadow.
Puppetted the other ninja and watch them duke it out lmao. Good enough to get him down to one life. I honestly would love if they introduce a permanent companion to Sekiro so you can just 2v1.
