O'Rin of the Water (水生のお凛, Mibu no Orin) is a Mini-Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This Complete O'Rin of the Water Mini-Boss Guide gives you strategies on how to beat O'Rin easily, as well as tips, tricks and lore notes. Mini-Bosses are special Enemies that are uniquely named, and have 2 or more health bars. This means they require at least 2 Deathblows in order to kill, they are generally much more difficult than normal enemies, and they drop some of the best loot in the game.

O'Rin of the Water Location

Where to find O'rin of the Water in Sekiro?

  • Mibu Village: Found after Large Blossom Tree area, by taking a right turn from the Water Mill Sculptor's Idol
  • This boss is optional, however her fight will trigger regardless of speaking to her or not.
  • Fleeing and resting at the Idol will reset her dialogue.

What do you get from defeating O'Rin of the Water in Sekiro?

O'Rin of the Water Notes & Tips

  • The Japanese transliteration O’Rin can translate to “Lady Rin” (in the sense of respect and/or affection, but not nobility).
  • Her title "of the Water" in the English version is not a direct translation. In the Japanese version, she is called Mibu no O'Rin which means "O'Rin who lives in Mibu" or "O'Rin who comes from Mibu".
    • On the other hand, the location name Mibu (水生) itself means lit. "Water-Life", that is, a marsh, a lake, or a riverside. Possibly it implies the villagers of Mibu are somehow connected to the Water Gods or Okami.  It is possible that the translation team decided to avoid a direct translation so that players who play the English version can infer that O'Rin is related to Okami.
  • The instrument O'Rin plays is known as a Shamisen.
  • O'Rin is considered an Apparition-type enemy, so using a Divine Confetti will increase damage dealt to her.
  • Without Divine Confetti effect all damage on her is reduced in 1.5 times.
  • O'Rin may be a homage to the Blade of the Immortal (Mugen no Juunin) character of the same name, Rin (literally the same kanji 凛). This Game Informer interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki also confirms that Sekiro was influenced by Blade of the Immortal.
  • She is weak to the Sabimaru weapon, implying she is Okami or a descendant of one.
  • Floating Passage is an excellent combat art to employ against her, as its quick number of slashes breaks through her posture with ease, and is quickly cast, negating her speed. By maintaining a close distance, or keeping her in a corner, it's possible to stun-lock her for an easy victory.
  • You can use the Loaded Umbrella - Magnet to deflect her attacks more easily, and if you have Phoenix's Lilac Umbrella and Projected Force, you can hit her for great damage.
  • You can use the Great Feather Mist Raven to set her on fire and get behind her when she attacks giving you openings.
  • O'Rin is able to be Puppeteered if backstabbed as a second, final deathblow (tested on PC version 1.05 by jumping over her after breaking her Posture on her last life). Therefore, it should be possible to bring her along for assistance to the nearby Corrupted Monk fight. Of course, if you are going to do this, you should clear out the group of enemies before that boss so she doesn't get caught up in fighting them.

O'Rin of the Water Lore

  • O'rin of the Water, Snake Eyes Shirahagi, Snake Eyes Shirafuji, and the enemies found in the Gun Fort are all descendants of the Okami Clan mentioned by various items, which is why they all share a weakness to poison. As explained in the description of the Sabimaru prosthetic tool: "Wielded in wars of old, the blade's blue rust was used to drive off inhuman Okami warrior women. Even now, it is likely to be effective against their descendants."
  • The connection O'rin shares with Jinzaemon Kumano is nebulous, at best—while the items Jinza's Jizo Statue and Bundled Jizo Statue seem to imply a familial connection (Jizo Statues, according to their description, are enswathed "to express feelings of parental love,"), there is absolutely no other mention or information available in-game regarding how O'rin, Jinzaemon, and the character Lord Sakuza mentioned by O'rin might be related.

Sekiro O'rin of the Water Strategy Write-up

Old Deathblow Method: Before triggering her fight, it is possible to knock her from her standing position by jumping on her head (single jump - not double jump/stomp). After doing so, you will be able to perform a deathblow from behind her without needing to deplete her health as if in stealth. NOTE: this is now patched  and you cannot get a free deathblow this way.

New Deathblow Method: Before triggering the fight, one can get behind O'Rin and then throw a ceramic shard, opening her up for a deathblow for about half a second. NOTE: This is now patched as well.

Fighting O'Rin traditionally requires either learning her combo timing or having very quick reflexes. She hits hard but after successfully parrying/dodging her full combo she will allow a couple counterstrikes before going ethereal and retreating. As soon as she phase shifts and retreats use that time to heal if needed. Trying to run away to heal can lead to a quick death due to her being able to close in on you from almost any range inside the arena. Once you get good at her timing and pull her health down, she's very easy to stagger with repeated attacks.

Due to O'Rin's unpredictable movement, staying still and focusing on deflections without performing counter-attacks is a viable strategy. She attacks frequently enough that you can deal a deathblow without damaging her health, and when you aren't moving she is much easier to track. The largest damage she takes to her posture is jump kicks off her in response to her Perilous sweep attacks. Consistently landing these will result in her posture failing soon.

Strategy for using Sabimaru Prosthetic:

O'Rin will easily get poisoned by blue rust. Two full combos will always poison her. Run around while she destroyed by the poison, her attacks are easily dodged while sprinting. Deathblow when she has no vitality left for easy execution.

Slow Walk around the Rock strategy:

You can get O'Rin stuck in a passive slow walk on the stairs just after the wooden bridge. From here you can use Nightjar Slash or the Ichimonji to deal heavy damage safely. Be sure to get her down low enough to drop down and deal the final blow before jumping back up.

Cheese Strategy:

Instead of parrying or dodging O'Rin's attacks, one can simply circle O'Rin at a distance (while sprinting). This will prompt O'Rin to close the distance with a short 2-slash combo, after which the player can safely and easily make 1-2 hits before retreating again. Slowly but surely, this strategy can be repeated indefinitely until O'Rin's vitality is depleted.

Safety Cheese Strategy:

O'Rin can be lured towards the idol nearby. If she is lured far enough, she will naturally return to her fighting area. In this state, she will not attack, but only block. The fight is made trivial by getting her stuck on a rock to the right side of the valley, near Jinzaemon. She will slowly walk around the rock, but will be pushed back into the corner from the player's attacks. She will block attacks, but some will go through. A two-hit combo is the most that can be done without her blocking, so simply keep doing that. Over time, her health will deplete, and her posture will break, opening up a deathblow. Repeat the strategy for the second health bar for a victory with minimal effort.

Closer to the idol there is a rock against a wall, I accidentally pushed her into the corner and was able to keep swinging again and a again without her bing able to do anything else and posture broke for a deathblow that way

This is a strong enemy. If she simply had an inescapable fog door, she would be right up there with all of the infamously strong bosses in the game (headless ape, etc).

to anyone going to attempt Corrupted Monk with her as a puppet, be warned: make sure you backstab her repeatedly to ensure the timer on the ninjutsu resets and she actually makes it over there.

I ended up giving up regardless though because she'd lose to a snail in a race, so make sure you are willing to spend 15 minutes on this

          • Anonymous

Her spiraling dive attack allows you to jump behind her and hitting her cancels the usual follow-up attack.

I beat her with like 5 gourds as I thought I could just walk right past her lol. Clearly that didn't work, so I decided to fight her. I was debating whether or not to use divine confetti, then realized her attacks were pretty easy to parry so I just worked my way to one deathblow. Then I remembered she was weak to poison, so I decided to use Sabimaru on her last life and holy does that shred the woman. I think can actually deflect her attacks was because her move set is similar to a boss in Ronin: The Last Samurai, which is a mobile-inspired sekiro game. Really neat boss though.

              • This boss is absolutely amazing. Today I encountered her with 3 attack power and 12 vitality (yes I skipped a ton of areas and bosses cause I like exploring in these games, same reason I found Ash Lake before getting the Lordvessel) and she whooped my butt.

Reading about ways to win (poison, divine confetti, cheese strats, etc.) I really felt like this boss was out of my reach for now. But then I read a comment saying that attack power doesn't really matter, and that the whole game truly is just a big skill check.

And so I went to work, I tried beating her but died over and over. Over the course of an hour I felt as if I was ready to go to bed when suddenly, it clicked. I was deflecting every single one of her attacks. I was jumping to punish the sweep. I managed to get a deathblow on her. "Good progress for this run" I thought, expecting to die promptly after. But no. The deflects kept coming, and soon I got my 2nd and final deathblow on her.

This boss was like what Genichiro is for many others. This was my moment. It really is a switch that flips on - hopefully it stays on for future battles haha! Thank you for reading my story :)

she's harder than lots of remnant bosses on charmless, unfortunate she's just a mini boss so you can't grind her moveset in a reflection fight.

                  • Anonymous

my only trouble for this boss i cant drink potions peacefully.....until i noticed tiny minigraves around me, suddenly all becomes easy, beat her fair and square, without sabimaru cheese, or mortal blade spam, i just need a reasonable second for heal or use convetti

                    • Anonymous

Too cool of a boss concept to be a mini boss. It's a shame they didn't expand upon her more and make her a real boss.

                      • Anonymous

Just focus on deflecting ( also use Gokan’s sugar or she WILL take over half your health) and use sabimaru after she does a combo of a flying sweep.

                        • Anonymous

This encounter reminds me of a japanese ghost story where a woman with a hidden face stops you while you're walking home late at knight and, after unveiling her deformed face, asks you whether she's beautiful and then whatever you answer she just R1 spams the **** out of you or something like that. First time I played I just walked past her cause in the story it's how you don't get killed, thinking it was a clever reference. Turns out it wasn't.

                          • I found her to be super enjoyable to fight, she's straight forward and her flowing animations are beautiful and weren't overly difficult for me to read. I killed her on my first attempt and while it was sometimes hard to keep posture down, it's easy to recover it after avoiding her perilous attacks. I think I only got a hit for damage on her <6 times over the entire fight, it's mostly deflecting. It's not possible to deathblow her with inconsistent deflect timing, perfectly deflecting 2-3 of her combos making sure to hit her in between when she steps back will fill her posture for a deathblow.

I think my 25 attempts soloing Melania Blade of Miquella on light load paid off here because O'rin of the Water moves extremely similarly to Melania and she doesn't even have 1/3 of her level of bullshit.

Improved Sabimaru absolutely melts her health for both phases. You really only need to proc it once in each phase because as soon as she reaches half health you can just focus on posture damage, removing the need for Divine Confetti. Just deflect her predictable, rapid attacks and jump over her sweep attack.

                              • Anonymous

This is the perfect fight for testing your ability to perfect deflect. Her perilous attack is easily side steppable (people keep trying to recommend jumping but i found the side-dodge a lot easier since she has like no range on her attack.) She can be somewhat punishing to your poise meter if you just block instead of trying to perfect deflect, but she basically has no other mechanic.

The Sacred Flame Barrel is an expensive upgrade but is highly effective against apparition-type enemies. Just make an opening and do point-blank full charge and that would be at least 10% of their HP gone. A cheese method so not recommended if you have something called "pride"

                                  • Anonymous

Use Sabimaru until she gets poisoned, that will stun her for a moment and you can hit with your sword. After tha stun is over, stop attack and just parry. Don't try to attack her at all, just parry. If you see the perilous attack, double jump on her head. By parrying her attacks you'll fill her pose very quickly and be able to deathblow her. Then repeat for the second deathblow.

Playing a charmless run right now and she is giving me a ton of trouble. Took down genichiro in two tries but I can’t seem to touch her.

                                      • Anonymous

One of my favorite mini bosses. All you have to do is parry and not attack and it's ez mode. Feels like a dance.

I finally beat her. 1 hour of dying to memorize her moveset.

I got the first deathblow with almost no damage to her health. I almost dropped the ball on the second one but she dead af.

Hit her with Mortal Draw a few times to reduce her health and her posture bar fills pretty quickly. All you have to do is block and hit her a couple of times when she's open. I tried it once with Floating Passage and died. The second time I used Mortal Draw and took care of her easily.

                                            • Anonymous

At first I attempted to treat this fight as some sort of hectic dance, chasing her around the battlefield.

But once I started holding my ground and letting her come to me instead, the tides turned.

Also, as soon as the fight starts spam sabimaru for free poison proc and decent posture buildup.

Fun miniboss, wish I could battle her again.

I found a way to cheese your way through her
Take her across the bridge and little bit in the land behind it
She will start heading back, go to her side and start hitting her push her so she would go into the left pocket and just keep her there if she tries to leave, punish her
You can go from the side/back hit her 3 times then turn around her hit her again
But be careful if u keep hitting her she will fall in River and you will have to reset the fight by sitting in the idol

                                                • Anonymous

You can cheese her pretty easily by jumping over her dive attack, hitting her once and blocking her five strike combo. She pauses long enough for you to use the Double Ichimonji on her. Usually she does her five strike combo again after that. Ichimonji her again until dead.

                                                  • Anonymous

After struggling with this lady for a while I felt so happy to learn that all you have to do is simply keep jump-kicking her. If you have fought her enough and died, I think you have a pretty good way of knowing when its safe to do it (besides when she does the swipe attack). But yeah, jump on her head all day.

                                                    • Anonymous

Maybe my favorite miniboss in the game, I love the spooky youkai aesthetic and her flowing, graceful style. Very good encounter, and very fun to fight.

                                                        So disappointed
She gladed me in That samurai Quest but I just skip her and the dialogue gone (I think there's no new dialogue and I'm wrong) bruh I really want to heard it

Well she kinda likes the blue shirt old guy in Dojo dadechamber, she ez if you know how to Parry and counter a slash

Maybe it's one of those I game hints from the Devs as to what is effective but.. The villagers beforehand drop fistful of Ash frequently, use it! There's a little pause before she starts attacking after one of her teleport forward movements, blind her then!
helps lower her health a bit before focusing on posture damage through deflections

The best way to fight her is simple. Deflect deflect deflect, head bop. Turtling can't beat actually learning the game.

She's one of those fights that really displays Sekiro's combat at its best.

                                                                        • Anonymous

No way Sakuza is Jinzaemon's father. He's called LORD Sakuza. If Jinzaemon were his son, he'd be a noble, and he neither looks like it nor does he have the position of one (guarding the moat).

Plus, if the trivia section on Jinzaemon's page is correct and he has a "Westernized" accent, that'd mean his father is/was from the there as well. Do you think a foreigner would be a noble in rural Japan?

I think it's more likely that Jinzaemon's father knew about O'Rin because it's common folklore. In case you want to argue with fate: Remember O'Rin never called to Jinzaemon. She's even surprised when he shows up. I don't know why Jinzaemon heard O'Rin's melody from so far away, but we don't know a lot about his background and motivations in general.

People should be careful with assumptions about this sidequest because otherwise they might end up ruining its simple beauty.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I geared up for this mini-boss, reading the wiki and learning of the cheese methods due to how tough the community says she is... beat her first try, no cheesing :) (although i did try to get a backstab on her unsuccessfully). I’m shocked i was able to pull it off. She’s one of my favorite mini-bosses now.

Strat i used: consecutive deflects, stick to her like glue, use Senpou Leaping Kicks or jump kick during her sweep attacks, and get her poisoned at the beginning of both her health bars (any version of the Sabimaru will work). This is a posture break fight and using Gokan’s sugar helps a lot because she will very quickly fill yours (seriously she dishes out a ton of posture damage).

                                                                            • Anonymous

If you're having trouble with the deflects I'd recommend not deflecting at all and instead looping the same way she does. This fight got way easier once I started sprinting around instead of trying to deflect/dodge.

When she is preparing to lunge--or any time she phases out--start sprinting away from her (still target locked) and then loop either left or right. Her lunge will come up short or miss, and the follow-up attacks can be avoided by continuing to sprint to open space. After her last attack she'll be vulnerable to 1-2 hits or a poison combo.

If she gets too close to the edge of the map DON'T follow her. There isn't enough open space at the edges to avoid her attacks like this. This all needs to be done with the middle of the arena between you and her.

If she's doing that thing where she's just very slowly walking, she's waiting for you to rush her so that she can slice you. If you rush in you'll likely get hit. Better to throw a shuriken--she usually comes at you again after that. Or you can wait, but those moments feel long af.

The momentum of this fight is really cool with this strat. It has a very 'push and pull' feel to it, and the symmetry of both her and you looping back and then rushing forward to strike is really satisfying.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Very easy, very fast: Use some Gokan's Sugar (golden candy, 1 per health bar should do) and the High Monk technique. Don't even try to hit her: just deflect the attack, and use the High Monk when she starts a perilous attack. The High Monk with destroy her posture really quickly, the constant deflection will keep her from getting some posture back in the meanwhile, the Gokan's Sugar keeps you from losing your posture.
PS: He you need to unlock the High Monk technique, you can get easy and fast skill points with the two Nightjar spirits just before the Hidden Forest idol.

                                                                                • Anonymous

I'm an incredibly average player, but she's one of the few (mini)bosses that I killed on the first try. Every time I created distance, she did the exact same charge attack that was easily blocked and gave an opening afterwards. Just repeated this until she was dead.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Then grapple up the bridge and when i did the monk cheese monk actually didn't die but just started going into some weird praying stance and after a while standing back up and fighting.

Learned her patterns, deflect-chained followed by Floating Passage, and jump kick after her sweep. Jump away after you've counterattacked and guard to restore posture. Once I did that, beat her taking only 2 or 3 hits.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I think Jinzaemon was the son of O'rin, his father (presumably Lord Sakuza) tells him never to go into the forest as a child, O'rin says "you've brought this child in his stead" and this Jizo statue has pink instead of red cloth wrapping a child, similar to O'rin's cloth, almost like she's caressing her child after death. Also explains how he is the only one who can hear her music from afar. She could have just lured Sekiro, but didn't. There's a strong connection between Jinzaemon and O'rin.

I had to try more than once, but I think I killed her on like my fourth try or so? She wasn't substantially more difficult than the average mini-boss up until that point IMO.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

And charmless/demon bell, a deflecting-focused strategy just doesn't work for me. Sabimaru poison? Yes but 10 of them for just a half of her health. Then you cant chip his vitality, or only after spacing her. Because, despite what is written in this wiki, you can rarely punish her after a good deflection… At this state, the most difficult enemy in the game for me.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Moving directly behind her, the prompt reverted back to dialogue. I spent a long time just circling her to make sure of the consistancy of this. It also took me two attempts to kill her and I was able to do the same thing both times, starting the fight with one free deathblow just for walking up along her side. No ceramic shard needed. Nothing. Anyone else?

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

This boss was the moment this method stopped working, after countless death I couldn't even take the one deathblow against her or the corrupted monk, ended up wasting all my confetti then put the game on hold for months in frustration. I kept reading online that you have to use deflect and playing Sekiro like a soul game make it harder so I gave this fight another shot yesterday and killed her in less than 15 try. Spam those deflect people !

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

It is almost completely fu*king impossible on NG+. Absolutely garbage fight, terrible mechanics and extremely poor design. I guess even FromSoft fu*ks up sometimes.

                                                                                                                  • Thus Mini-Boss ist one of the simplest Bosses in a whole game... To kill her you need back off few steps and stand a near stone platform on which ywe we're safe. Now we just wait for her attacks and when come close enough to us that we can strike with the sword of immortality take a hit and repeat it till the end.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Heck I don't even realize she is a mini boss because i can't lock on her and you can talk to her. I though she is just a normal NPC, the one that Jinzaemon had been looking for (well she is indeed the woman he had been looking for). So i kinda panicked when the music changed and she took out her sword. No special strategy, i just fight her like i fight a normal strong mobs. (trade hit, parry, evade, jump etc) Her posture is also very low, it's so easy to deathblow her.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Also a coupla Gokans can be handy. Using this method I beat her first time (and she skilled be bejesus outta me b4 that)

                                                                                                                        • Does anyone actually bother with sending Jinzaemon to her when all he does is watch as you get wrecked then gives you a one use item just rare enough that you will never use it. Then he dies dark souls style his quest complete no longer hollow... At least the Dr quest has experience and a few upgrade materials. I can't send the other guy to his doom or even the shady merchant but after he just watches Orin turn me into meat cubes my loyalty wavers.
