Spear Adept Notes & Tips

  • These enemies fight wielding a Naginata, and are very agile and aggressive. Avoid confronting more than one at the same time as they can quickly overwhelm the player.
  • They tend to perform jumping attacks that can be intercepted with an aerial Deathblow.
  • The spring-loaded axe spin-to-win attack is a reliable way to take them down, they may get some attacks in but they do little damage and  you have hyperarmor.
  • They will detect you after resurrecting, whether you lost all health, or used Bite Down or Hidden Tooth. So be prepared to continue fighting or retreat to a place where they cannot follow you.

Lore

  • Senpou Temple was seized by an obsession for the Undying, which corrupted their teachings and style. The monks exhibit atrophy, blindness, and grayish or green skin senpou monk details thumb1, which is how FromSoftware will often render the undead green hollows huntsman copse thumb1. In Dark Souls, the state of Undeath means gradually rotting, going mad, and potentially mutating. Doujun, who is a Senpou Monk, confirms that the research into the Rejuvenating Waters caused a kind of zombification, as his Abandoned Dungeon is full of deformed undead. The Rejuvenating Waters corrupt men to the point that they no longer live as men, instead they become monsters incapable of feeling pain or fear. They are referred to as "degenerates" by Isshin and are responsible for kidnapping and killing the Children of Rejuvenation.

I wanna ****ing puke everytime I see this enemy. The visceral reaction I get whenever they see me with their 360 degree vision with Gachiina candy active makes my blood boil. There is not one single more bullshit enemy. Demon of Hatred is 1000x more enjoyable than these pieces of ****.

These guys are weird, they only appear around two times total in the entire game and they are in groups both times. For what they are they are quite difficult considering the path to senpou is accessable right after beating blazing bull (which is what I did). I kind of wish they appeared more than they did, they were a pretty unique enemy to fight and a more powerful varient near the end of the game (maybe a miniboss version somewhere in Ashina castle? Would probably spice up that area in the endgame considering the copius amounts of interior ministry ninjas that are around in late game AC).

They are pretty weak against stealth mechanics compared to most other "hard" mobs. You could use Finger whistle prosthetic to lure closest of them away and then just land backstab when he turn his back. Besides, seems like they are immune for backstabs after using any kind of fan prosthetic that usually allows you to finish off human-sized mobs.
Also it looks like they are vulnerable for aerial dethblow only during high jump just before they started spinning mid air towards you.

I noticed that it's possible to use the grappling hook to move between the outcroppings of the terrace, and when I do this they followed me by jumping over. This gave me a few ideas, but I couldn't get an anti-air deathblow off when they jumped (although I couldn't even do it to them when fighting normally, so this might be a skill issue on my part), and hitting them with the shuriken while they're mid-air doesn't have increased damage (as projectiles usually do against airborne targets). You can however simply attack them when they're close, and that does knock them out of the air (like when you hit them while jumping).

The trick is to attack them whenever they are airborne, preferably with a katana but also with shurikens if that's not possible. They won't guard and will be knocked down allowing for more attacks hurting their posture and vitality. One of the most fun and rewarding enemies in the game to fight when you learn when you can punish them.

These guys are a genuine challenge that's a good deal of fun to deal with. On their own at least, two at once is a death sentence unless you cheese them.

Personally I love these guys. Hard but fun and manageable. With the right rhythm (regular slash with a slight delay) you can sometimes keep em on the defensive until they get posture broken. Never did the anti-air thingie but they are vulnerable when jumping. Hit them with the sword or shuriken. Also I believe their perilous attack is always a sweep. Jump!

i managed to kill all three playing unlocked and just kiting them around the front of the main temple and sneaking a few hits in here and there, wouldn't recommend it though

fun fact, this is the only spear user that you can't mikiri counter in the game (none of his attacks are a thrust attack, gyoubu has a thrust attack but it can only be deflected)

It's a bit of a shame they never appear outside Mount Kongo. Easily the most entertaining enemies in the game, would've loved to see them wreak havoc in Ashina Castle during the incursion.

If you're struggling with them, always go for stealth. Genchin's sugar is your best friend, and ceramic shards will help lure them toward corners where you can stealth kill them. Fighting them in groups is REALLY fun, but not at all advised lol.

its almost impossible to damage them, they always block your first attack and deflect the second one, but i found an easy way to damage their vitality, charge at them with the loading spear thrust type or spiral spear (holding l2) and press l2 again to close the distance, then use floating passage, this is useful cuz they will receive damage while blocking and they only deflect the last slash, after that repeat it again and that would be enought to bait them for the aerial deathblow (they always throw two knives before jumping so run towards them after deflecting or dodging the knives)

As the guide pointed facing two or more spear adepts means death. Dealing with one is fun though its like a mini boss. Shuriken is highly effective against them to chip their health. Once the health is 3/4 their posture fills in no time. It's a shame they aren't a mini boss .

There's an easy way to kill the 3 outside the Senpou Temple Main Hall.

First, go inside the temple and out the back exit, to the side of the building and backstab the third patrolling straw monk. then go back in the building.
Next, cause some commotion. Tickle the centipede monks with your katana (but don't kill them). They'll start puking some crickets.
The insects will jump around and cause the back to back monks to go on alert and investigate the noise.

Carefully go out and backstab one of them. If you're lucky you can backstab the other before he notices.
Or you could Puppet the first monk and watch them fight. Another way would be to just run and hide and backstab the second dude once he calms down, since no one's watching his back anymore.

Because they are covered in straw, the flame vent is SUPER effective. The burn status stops them from regaining posture.

I have NO IDEA how these weren't re-tooled into a mini-boss enemy during development. I tried fighting one of these guys on NG+2 with charmless bell, and it took me 10 gourds and a couple of one minds to take him down. Absolutely insane. Their jumps and leaps and helicopter spear rushes are superhuman, a far cry from the other monks at Senpou Temple. They should've just replaced the Centipede dude miniboss with one of these.

I've beaten bosses on the first try but for th life of me can't figure how to beat theese guys, unless cheesing them.

Try luring partway down the stairs, then get the high ground and back them into the pagoda/towards the cliff

If you're trying to get past the two standing back to back at the main hall, there is a pretty cheesey, but stylish, way to get past them and the third that usually joins the fight. Take a gachiin's sugar and creep up to them from the side, so they are looking either direction. They will spot you if you take too long, so make sure to get in there quickly and deliver a stealth deathblow on one of them. Then use your bloodsmoke ninjitsu to disappear again and deathblow the second one. If you're quick and time it right, the third won't even notice, but even if he does, it's 1-on-1 instead of 3-on-1 so you at least stand a chance.

I found these guys so hard to beat at first but i tried being ultra aggressive and it worked, just keep swinging at them none stop and they will go down because they are bad at deflects

                                          • Anonymous

These guys have very high posture, strong defense, and tremendous burst damage potential. Their moveset also has a good tendency to keep them just out of your sword's range. Anti-air deathblows are the quickest way to deal with them, but can sometimes be risky land because the start-up animation for their aerial attack is very short and can deal substantial damage right your deathblow starts. A method I've found some success with is to bait a jump, and try to land a shuriken to anti-air them, then as they get up, hit them with the loaded axe for a massive amount of posture damage.

                                            • Anonymous

These are the most busted enemies in the entire game. They are manageable enough on your first playthrough but become completely broken on a second playthrough with hard mode. I would say they are more "difficult" than any mini-boss but they aren't really difficult, just not balanced in the slightest. They also don't obey the general rules of combat for dealing with every other humanoid enemy in the game and require kiting and just complete avoidance until they commit to one big swing after which you can get a few hits in (that is, if you're not fighting more than one at the same time. Because otherwise you will have no time to swing). Once I got past them I just avoid them like the plague now. Breezing through NG+ with demon bell + no kuro's charm but facing even just one of these guys honestly sucks the fun right out of the game for me.

                                              • Anonymous

No idea what they drop on 1st playthru, I killed all 3 of them outside Main Hall and they gave me a Bulging Coin Purse.

                                                • Anonymous

These guys are hell on hard mode. Their short-range swings are actually double attacks, so perfectly parrying both hits is out of the question. Getting hit when trying to land the anti-air is pretty much a 1HKO.
