Sekiro Shigekichi of the Red Guard Strategy Writeup

Kill all his underlings around him first, turn the last couple with the Puppeteer Ninjutsu. Initiate combat with a deathblow. He fights like a fire-aligned Juzou. Constantly running around him until he drinks or lights his sword or blows fire, then attacking him from behind, will eventually win you the day. Use the Withered Red Gourd and Ministry Dousing Powder to keep Burn effects at bay, and he should go down fairly easily

Alternative (very easy) way: From the Outskirts Wall - Stairway Idol go all the way to the top backstabbing every red guard. Cross the gate in sneak position and backstab Shigekichi to remove the first of his life bars. For the second lure him to the top of the stairs and bait his flame sword attack to make him hit the gunpowder crates standing there. The explosion (run away from it!) will greatly damage his stance  leaving him almost open for the second dethblow if the armor was previously removed with the Loaded Spear.

This is one of he most fun battles in the entire game. Just look at all the potential puppeteer Ninjustu targets running around. There is even a cannonier standing at the gate right near Shigekichi just begging to be on your team and create some havoc in this fight. There are also many of the red samurai taking out the Ashina guards on the bridge, and you can usually run up behind and put a quick 3 of them on your team with ease and then head back to gang gang on the mini boss. For an easy win tho I typically take out the lesser riflemen and some of the tougher dual wielding samurai, hide them either deathblow the mini boss first and time it right to puppeteer one of the remaining dual weilders and then it’s an easy win after that!

"Kill all his underlings around him first" I would love to do that, if it weren't for the fact that the red guards are some of the toughest non-boss enemies in the game, and that it seems almost impossible to not aggro more than one of them at a time, even along with Shigekichi himself sometimes (and i'm sure most Sekiro-players can relate that this game is not great when it comes to dealing with ganks). How the **** do i actually manage to just fight him head-on without wasting 6 flasks first?

Best fight I had in the game on my first playthrough.

I crossed the bridge leading to him, killed most enemies around, then that annoying ******* in the corner alerted the rest. Took them out, used Blue Ninjutsu on one guy but he got stuck on a roof and didn't join the fight. So I try attacking Shigekichi. Seemed easy enough but he did massive damage, I pop Ungo's sugar and and start experimenting, The moment I see the armour I try the spear and I'm amazed at my resourcefulness. Gotta use it twice to completely destroy the armour. then I get burned and have to use the dousing powder I just picked up like a minute ago.

After the first deathblow to Shigekichi I get killed. Rise again, I'm out of all gourd charges and pellets. I decide to use Ako's sugar instead of Ungo's, and I eventually break Shigekichi's posture and finish him. First try.

Best Fight I had in the game so far, so close to dying, utilizing everything in my inventory, smart thinking to make the fight easier, still requiring skill. The highs you can get in Sekiro are damn impressive

biggest mistake of my life - i literally just wanted his aggro to go off so i can pick off the normal enemies in the area, i went to the temple with note ''our swords and pikes did nothing'' and grappled onto the tree to wait out his aggro but then he just falls off the map...
did i literally just miss a prayer bead? any way to get it back?

Best tactic I found was to clear out the stairs, stealth (Gachiins) for the first deathblow, then lure him back down the stairs and spam sabimaru on him. Got him down to nearly 1/3 hp just from the sabimaru damage alone (I had piercing sabimaru at the time).

theres a barrel outside the doors that when exploded will do massive damage to his posture. go in for the sneak attack, then run to the barrels just out side the door and hope they dont explode with you near them

This guy was cake and the person in the video fights him like a coward. I’m serious. Use the ninjitsu on the fire boi walking up the stairs then wreck him with your sword while flame boii does work. I have the boss walk through the gate where you fight the ogre at the beginning and it was easy pickings

My lore on this guy would be that he’s the long-lost grandfather of both Juzou and Tokujiro. He was a grandmaster to his grandchildren, and was mightier than the both of them combined; he trained his grandsons for years until, finally, they earned his mantle. Few days passed, and they found that Shigekichi was taken by the government as a powerful weapon against anyone who stood in his way; it was when the war on Ashina broke out, and more blood was shed. Both Juzou and Tokujiro have not heard from their grandfather in years, but they hold their strength and size to honour him. It turns out that Shigekichi worked for the Red Guard, lying in wait for any Ashina Elite or Soldier of Isshin Ashina.

I love watching videos of trash streamers. They cheese every boss, and mini-boss possible. They find cheap ways to max their prosthetics easily, and they get almost every bead and seed in the game. Then they get to Isshin. And they quit after 10 mins because the game is too hard.

this guy felt harder than the other sumo wrestlers. he hits like a truck. he stops drinking and using his fire moves when his hp gets low so u have to face him. and he's got a weird kick attack that can straight one shot u with no warning.

The "very easy" way mentioned here doesn't even require you to kill the gunner guards leading up to him. INCREDIBLY easy way to beat him...deathblow from above, loaded spear him twice to remove his armor, then just kite him back through the door near the gunpowder...even if he doesn't use his fire sword, you can bait the other enemies into shooting it, the explosion puts him one hit away from a deathblow.

I think it’s great when players use a ridiculous cheese strategy to make him fall off the map, and then complain when they don’t get the prayer bead.

By that point you have a lot of experience with his moves so the only thing that could really make the fight difficult is not realizing you can take his armor off (and naturally the amount of enemies guarding him).

Also can be helpful to use the loaded spear. It takes two separate pulls to get his armour off completely, but each time will stagger him for an easy 2-3 hits. Once removed, he takes more damage, making this fight a cakewalk.

Watching for when he takes or drink, you can get 2-3 hits in, and then when he lights his sword you can get 1-2 hits in. He seemed to stop doing that once I got him down to around 1/5 or 1/6 of his health left then he would only attack. Watch his moves and you can run in for a hit when he does a bash into a downward swing. Then when he does a single downward slash you can bait him into doing a second quickly after by moving in closer and moving away to avoid it, then run in for an attack. You could also parry several of his hits to take him down at this point but be careful because he does lots of posture damage even if you parry and can easily break your guard and kill you pretty quickly.

"Masanaga will be alerted to your presence (regardless of stealth) upon first entering his area, but running away and coming back will allow you to perform a deathblow." that one is wrong, you can climb up on the side of the temple with a Gachiin active without alerting him.

The only issue with this guy is that you have to kill all the mobs around him. The bosses are hard and fun to fight, but having to meticulously murder all the mobs around homeboy only to get killed 20 seconds into the boss fight doesn't make bosses like these very fun to fight. They are just tedious. The fight itself is great, but getting from the bonfire to the boss is a pain.

He can be cheesed by getting his attention then running to the building behind where he spawns. He cannot enter the door and you can wait for him to swing, dash in for two hits, then back out and wait for him to swing again. I would recommend killing all other enemies first though.

His weakness is on his back. Try stay behind and attack his back. Stay away and run around when he swing sword. Just normal strikes with normal blade is enough to kill him.

If you mind control the warrior with a flame cannon on the stairs behind the gates which the boss is guarding you can make the fight easier since that cannon melts his posture.
