As you make progress, time of day advances in game (as well as in real life). Going from one state to the next will increase enemy stats (max health, max posture, posture regeneration rate, attack power). The increase is defined in the game files individually for each location. Some other changes might occur. There are four distinct states:
Morning
The game progresses from night (during the tutorial) to morning, after you have arrived at the Dilapidated Temple for the first time.
Noon
The game progresses from morning to noon, after you have defeated one of these four Bosses:
- Genichiro Ashina (Ashina Castle)
- Corrupted Monk (Ashina Depths)
- Folding Screen Monkeys (Senpou Temple; impossible to reach without glitches)
- Guardian Ape (Sunken Valley; impossible to reach without glitches)
Evening
The game progresses from noon to evening, after you have defeated three out of four mentioned Bosses.
Effects:
- Loot tables of some enemies will start to shift, e. g. Fulminated Mercury will start to drop from some enemies.
- Revenge Spirits are spawned. Their type is determined by the first boss killed out of the 4 mentioned above:
1) Nightjar Ninja Spirits and Fencer Spirits if it was Genichiro Ashina,
2) Villager Spirits if it was Corrupted Monk
3) Elder Monkey Spirits (they are quite rare because this is effectively cut content. One of them can be found near Red and White Pinwheel location) if it was Guardian Ape
4) None at all if it was Folding Screen Monkeys (again, this is not an intended route)
Night
The game progresses from evening to night, after you have entered Fountainhead Palace for the first time.
Effects:
- Contrary to some beliefs, no additional revenge spirits spawn.

Notes
[1] Demon Bell increases enemies stats to the level of the next time of day. If it is currently Night, the stats used are from the last column called "Bell Night".
[2] Don't forget that being charmless gives enemies another (max hp & max posture & posture regen) multiplier on top of Time of Day, which is one of the following:
Weak enemy | Strong enemy | Miniboss | Boss |
1.5 | 1.2 | 1.125 | 1 |

Further details about what exactly changes, when moving from one state to the next, would be especially helpful.

This mechanic would work WAY better if it replaced the current dragonrot effects. Dragonrot would be way cooler if you had to choose wether to purge the rot with a tear, fight the new spirits for extra loot, or avoid them, when you get rot
