Blackhat Badger is a Merchant NPC in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Blackhat Badger is a "rat," dwarf shinobi, fugitive that dislikes both Ashina and Nightjar, and will sell items for a profit from this safe location. His name comes from the large black metal hat he can always be found wearing.

Blackhat Badger Information

Location

  • Blackhat Badger can be found in Ashina Castle, past the Old Grave idol, by dropping into a house with a broken rooftop after defeating the Blazing Bull and attaining access to Ashina Castle.
  • After purchasing the Iron Fortress from him for 1600 sen, buying the two expensive items he has to offer and after you talk to Isshin Ashina, he will move to the Senpou Temple near the Kite Mechanism.
  • After raising the kite using the Puppeteer Ninjutsu, he will move to the cave containing the Sunken Valley Cavern Sculptor's Idol across the ravine from the Senpou Temple.
  • Once defeating the Divine Dragon and returning from the Divine Realm, he can be found lying against a tree just left of the building with a hole in a roof where you met him initially.

Progression:

  • Blackhat Badger moves to Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo after his inventory is depleted or if you complete Ashina Castle and head to Senpou. He can be found near the Sunken Valley Cavern Idol mourning at the grave of his son.
  • If the player previously attack Blackhat Badger but did not kill him, he can be found dead during the first castle invasion.

Questline

  • Speak to Blackhat Badger inside the house with the broken roof just below the Old Grave Sculptor's Idol in Ashina Castle. Telling him you know about the Tengu of Ashina does not seem to effect the quest, it only provides further dialogue.
  • Upon purchasing the Iron Fortress, used to create the Loaded Umbrella Prosthetic Tool, for 1,600 sen, he will inform you of his intent to relocate to the Senpou Temple.
  • Upon arriving at the Senpou Temple you can find him near the Kite mechanism located down and to the right of the Senpou Temple Sculptor's Idol. You do not need to speak with him here to progress his questline.
  • Continue through the game until you receive the Puppeteer Ninjutsu from defeating the Folding Screen Monkeys in Senpou Temple's Main Hall.
  • Return to the Kite Mechanism and use the Puppeteer Ninjutsu on the "rat" near the mechanism. You must perform a stealth deathblow (from behind) on the rat to active the Ninjutsu. This will cause the "rat" to raise the Kite into the air.
  • Now you need to use the kite to cross over the ravine. Navigate you way up the mountain, through the temple to the Old Lady that speaks of the serpent and wants Rice. From the Old Lady grapple to the small plateau and then grapple up the large tree on its right side. When you make it to the top of the tree, use the Kite to grapple your way across the ravine.
  • Make your way down the ravine by grappling where you will arrive in the cave containing the Sunken Valley Cavern Sculptor's Idol.
  • Blackhat Badger will be standing in front of a grave marker near the Sunken Valley Cavern Sculptor's Idol. Upon speaking with him you will learn that this is the grave of his son and he thanks you for your help. He informs you of his intent to return to Ashina Castle shortly.
  • Continue playing through the game until you defeat the Divine Dragon.
  • Upon returning from the Divine Realm you will find Ashina Castle has broken out into a war between the Ashina Soldiers and the Shinobi that invaded earlier.
  • Make your way down to the Old Grave Sculptor's idol.
  • To the left of the house with the broken roof, near the lowest Cannon Soldier tower, you will find Blackhat Badger up against a tree surrounded by three dead shinobi.
  • Upon speaking with him he tells you that his emotions got the better of him when he saw the Shinobi targeting a child so he stepped in to rescue the child by engaging in combat with the Shinobi where he was wounded. He thanks you for your help and tells you he has something for you, but he won't give it to you, you'll have to take it off his corpse. He passes away to his wounds at the end of the conversation.
  • You can collect one (1) Mibu Pilgrimage Balloon from his corpse by holding the interact button (NOT pressing, you must hold the button).

Related NPCs

  • When you first meet him at the Graves of Ashina Castle, inside the building with a hole in its roof, he will ask you if you know anything about the Tengu of Ashina. (Responding to this question, however, does not appear to alter the questline.)

Notes & Trivia

  • Voiced by: ??

  • His corpse can be found there in the Old Grave area of Asashina Castle after the castle is invaded by the Interior Ministry. If not purchased beforehand: the items Iron Fortress and Anti-air Deathblow Text can be purchased for 2400 and 2200 Sen from the Offering Box found near Hanbei in the Dilapidated Temple, respectively.

  • An Eavesdropping opportunity found shortly after the Ashina Castle Sculptor's Idol sees two Senpou Sect Assassins ("Rats") reveal that they have been tasked with assassinating Blackhat for either the Interior Ministry or the Sect.

If you do not purchase anything from Blackhat Badger and progress to the point where the castle is invaded, the Iron Fortress item will be left on the ground where he originally was by the Old Grave idol. You can still purchase the Anti-air deathblow from the offering box for 2200 sen at the Dilapidated Temple at the start of the game, near the man who lets you practice combat skills.

Notably, the Anti-air deathblow costs 1000 more sen, but if you know which enemies are vulnerable to it, it trivializes a lot of difficult enemy encounters, and even a specific undead miniboss. The same can likely be said for the umbrella prosthetic, but I didn't use it personally this early into the game.

Blackhat will also be at his son's grave at the Sunken Valley Cavern idol, incase you want to progress his storyline as well.

Personally, this questline feels like the most excessively complex and expensive ones in the game, all for the sake of a single rare consumable item that's actually just four other consumables in a trenchcoat.

        • Anonymous

after buying both expensive items, you have to talk to him again to get him to move. I couldn't find him at Senpou, and he was still in Ashina Castle. Went and talked, he said his line about closing up shop, and then was at Senpou, looking at the kite mechanism.

I'm on NG+2 and did different order in the areas before facing Genichiro and now he's stuck with the same line about Tengu. I already beat Kongo, killed Genichiro, met Isshin, bought everything and nothing, is it glitched?

I mean, I've done before the quest but wanted to do it again.

DO NOT KILL BLACKHAT BADGER, IT ONLY BUMPS UP THE PRICE OF THE ANTI AIR DEATHBLOW TEXT TO 2200 AND YOU HAVE TO WAIT TILL YOU PICK UP THE WHITE LOTUS

Can't find proof on his voice actor but he totally reminds me of Hancock the ghoul from fallout 4 (Danny Shorago). Even says a line like "look who it is" that is nearly the same in fallout with the exact same accentuation.

lmao i misinterpreted that he drops anti air deathblow for free when killed so i killed him in Old Grave. Whoops.

Interesting... Did a run without talking to badger at all. Later I was exploring the area around the Old Grave statue at the castle around when Owl appears. I encountered a lone ministry assassin (The little guys in red not the shadows with the purple cloaks). He spoke when I killed him in a suspiciously similar voice "You... H-how could I... You..." He was around the gatehouse infront of the broken bridge I think. Seems to me Badger was in with the ministry like the rest of the senpou assassins but wolf managed to change his mind during his quest line.

I bought all his crap and never talked to him again then towards the end of the game i found blackhat where i first met him outside on the left balcony area dead next to another rat im guessing he died side by side with his son?

                      • Anonymous

"After purchasing the Iron Fortress from him for 1600 sen and buying the two expensive items he has to offer, and after you kill Genichiro, he will move to the Senpou Temple near the Kite Mechanism.". This is incorrect. I never went to his spot in Ashina until after beating 2/3 of the game (ie after getting all the aroma parts). He wasn't there and the Iron Fortress was on the ground. So I got it for free haha. I found him later at Senpou temple where the wiki describes, and followed his quest to the end. Never got to buy anti-air technique.

I killed him myself at his son's grave and he said something like is that how it is? After i strucked em and then he said u.. Piece... Of.... As he died

This is just a fan theory but I believe Sekiro murders Blackhat's son in the opening of the game. Remember the dwarf ninja under the bridge before you open the door? That was probably Blackhat's son.

i have a glitch where i literally can't pick up the last item in his quest lmao. He died and I've been trying to get the item for like 10 minutes and I just don't get a prompt to pick it up. I have tried reloading the area and quitting the game too, didn't work.

Is fighting this guy like fighting a Straw-Hat Senpou Assassin but with an unbreakable hat? If so he’d probably kill me.

                                • Anonymous

I never found him at Senpou. After defeating the divine dragon I found him back near where I first found him, but he was dead already. No more dialog, no chance to buy items one last time. I guess if you miss him at Senpou you're completely out of luck.

In my run, when he moved to Mt. Kongo, I found the Iron Fortress in the same place he were before leaving, and got it for free.

                                    • Anonymous

He moved to the temple on my run. I bought Iron fortress and Anti-air deathblow and he wouldn't move, but then came back after meeting Kuro, bought his Bite Downs, and THEN he said he'd move.

                                      • Anonymous

I'm in ng+3 and he doesn't move to the temple. Bought every item at least once, exhausted his dialog etc. Is there a point of the story you need to reach before he leaves?

Am i missing something? Who did i talk to and they died. Right next to sunken valley warp point in sunken valley? His son?

I never buy the fan went ahead and finish his questline then later I get the fan for free where he used to be at the old grave

Bought the shinobi tool from him and now he's near the grave and won't let me buy anything else. How do I get the anti-air technique?

                                              • Anonymous

When I bought everything from him he was coughing up dragonrot blood and it doesn't look like he can move somewhere else even after I reset the area.

The Anti-Air Deathblow Text shows up in the offering box BEFORE he dies. It's currently there for me and he's still at the grave. Because it will never be purchaseable from here on out I assume.

If you cant find him after he leaves the place with the monks, he is probbably dead. you can buy his key items in the box by the immortal soldier in homebase

I have talked to him after doing the kite route and he says that he will head back to Ashina Castle. I went back to the Old Grave and cleared out all of the enemies. At the bottom there is a black tengu on the broken bridge but on the right of the doorway there is a rat with red hat like those on the rooftops in Ashina Castle. There was a prompt for an eavesdrop there but before I could do anything he went aggro on me. I killed him and he had a line of dialogue as he died. "Impossible...How did you..." Now I can't get the eavesdrop prompt anymore. Can someone try to confirm this for me?

Guys I hit this guy and now he wants to kill me. Is there any way to make him friendly again as in dark souls? thanks

After talking to him at the grave me moves back to the broken bridge near the Old Grave idol in Ashina where he gets into a fight with a Tengu. Unfortunately he died before I could get to him so I don't know what happens next. He dropped a Sugar upon death.

Blackhat then goes to the idol behind the kite you use to cross the valley. He tells you his reason for coming to this place and says he will go back to Ashina Castle. Sry for my bad english.

To advance his questline you have to use the puppet ninjutsu on the rat near the kite then talk to blackhat once again.
