Nightjar Ninja Notes & Tips

  • They can be challenging at first.  You need to be super aggressive.
  • A shuriken followed by a Chasing Slice is a good way to stay close to them when they attempt to create distance from the player.
  • Most of the Nightjar after the first kite can be stealth killed.
  • There is one Nightjar waiting underneath the window leading to the Upper Tower - Antechamber, if alerted to the player's presence it will attempt a kamikaze attack, dealing heavy (if not fatal) damage.  The safest option is to ignore him and grapple towards the window.
  • The different varieties of Nightjar appear to drop different amounts of Xp and Sen [needs updating]
  • When they fall from their kites, they will whistle or emit a "WOOOOOOOO!" sound.
  • It is possible to interrupt the Black-Feathered Nightjar from lighting their weapon on fire.

I remember the first time I heard that Woooo sound. Nearly gave me a heart. I thought I was hearing ****, and didn't realize the sound was from the game until one of them smashed into me

These are a pretty fun fight when alone but its too easy to get overwhelmed when it's 2 and above, having lots of trouble with em right now.

This game is terrible, every corner of this game contains an annoying enemy you ve to "get gud" at just for him to summon 5 adds and butt****ing you. Seriously From Soft. GFY

So Isshin is Tengu, I assume the Nightjar are under his direct employ (All Ashina troops would be his to some extent, but as these are hanging about on his roofs and 3 are chilling in the dojo right under him I think there's a more "Personal guards" role to the Nightjars). There is a lower form of Tengu in Japanese myth called the Kotengu. I think the Nightjar are loosely based on these. The Kotengu are based on crows traditionally, but they are weird birdmen wearing traditional Japanese garbs. Given the similarity and relation to Tengu I'm sure there is some inspiration there.

Apparently, it's one of these jobbers who throws a shuriken at you if you beat Genichiro the first time you encounter him.

It seems like the Shuriken fighters are unable/struggle to parry, just wailing on them is a quick way to posture break them for an easy deathblow

Stumbled into one on a corner lighting up his face with firecrackers, and as I struggled to not **** my pants another flew into me from behind at mach speed. I'm not even mad. That was impressive.

It seems like Owl is one of them. He wears the same feathers and he has a bird nickname just like the others. (FYI Nightjars are a type of bird.)

These guys are really annoying even when they are alone because of their speed. They seem to suck at blocking Shuriken though. in short, try ranged battle.

Chasing slash with a shuriken is a great way to get up close to them. Their tendency to jump around means you'll often knock them out of the air with it just by randomly throwing it out.
