Fulminated Mercury (雷汞, Raikō) is a special Upgrade Material in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Fulminated Mercury is required for upgrading explosive Prosthetic Tools, and can be found in specific Locations or looted from specific Enemies.
Fulminated Mercury Usage
- Bring this material to The Sculptor located at the Dilapidated Temple to upgrade the following Prosthetic Tools:
- 1x for Leaping Flame (Tier 5 Loaded Spear)
- 2x for Suzaku's Lotus Umbrella (Tier 5 Loaded Umbrella)
- 2x for Purple Fume Spark (Tier 5 Shinobi Firecracker)
- 3x for Great Feather Mist Raven (Tier 5 Mist Raven)
- 3x for Lazulite Axe (Tier 6 Loaded Axe)
- 4x for Lazulite Sabimaru (Tier 6 Sabimaru)
- 4x for Lazulite Sacred Flame (Tier 6 Flame Barrel)
Where to Find Fulminated Mercury
Starts to drop from the members of the Sunken Valley Clan, once Time of Day in the game has advanced to evening. While farming, you have to have the effect of the Demon Bell ("Sinister Burden") active, for the following enemies to drop the material:
Notable locations are the Gun Fort in Sunken Valley and at the Poison Pool in Ashina Depths.
After Ashina Outskirts and Ashina Castle have been set ablaze, the material also drops from the following enemies there:
- Red Guard (Flamethrower)
- other members of the Red Guard
Furthermore, there are seven Fulminated Mercury to be found in fixed locations throughout the game:
- 1x in Bodhisattva Valley, behind a rock across an island with white monkeys, in the poisonous water area
(Note: This is the earliest one you can get) - 2x at the Hirata Estate, near the second Juzou encounter (second Memory)
- 1x in Ashina Castle (after set ablaze), halfway up the main staircase to the castle, in an alcove on the right
- 1x in Ashina Reservoir (after set ablaze), behind the Seven Ashina Spears miniboss
- 1x in Ashina Outskirts (after set ablaze), near the Ogre, next to a cannon
- 1x in Ashina Outskirts (after set ablaze), at the top of the stairs behind a set of boxes where the original Ogre was
Fulminated Mercury Notes & Tips
- Players can only carry a maximum of 99 material
- Trivia --> The phrase "tweak of chemistry" in this item's description could be a reference to the Breaking Bad episode "Crazy Handful of Nothin'", in which the main character Walter White uses a modified form of fulminated mercury as an intimidation tactic to secure payment for the drugs Tuco stole from his partner. After destroying the thief's office with and receiving his money, the thief asks him what he used to create the explosion. He answered "fulminated mercury - a little tweak of chemistry".
- User experience --> Can be farmed with Bell Demon buff before getting locked out of Ashina Outskirts from Cannoneers in Gun Fort. From my attempts at this I gathered 4x from 20 runs with first loot increase in Monk tree and balloon. Hadn't even got a single one before that, I was mainly just getting some powder.
- User experience --> Second the above post, but with both Monk tree increases, balloon, and Demon Bell averages 1+ per run. There are 2 gunmen at the bridge to take, 3 gunmen (1 tower 2 ground) and a cannoneer after passing through the gate (back toward Outskirts), and another 3 gunmen (all tower) and a cannoneer as you near the final shrine. 10 chances at this; it goes quickly and can all be done in a single balloon if you’re fast.
- User experience --> After Ashina is ablaze, use the Ashina Outskirts - Stairway Idol , the Demon Bell Buff activated and a Mibu Balloon active, kill the Ministry Rifleman on the Tower, the two on the Ground and then follow 2 patrolling Ministry Soldiers towards Ashina Castle. You will have several Rifleman to kill and if you are fast, you can kill all of them with 1 Balloon. I received 0-1 Mercury each Run on average.
- User experience --> (Tested in NG+) With Demon Bell active and Most Virtuous Deed, go to the Ashina Castle Idol once Ashina is ablaze and look to the stairs. There are 3-4 riflemen (signified by the gun on their back) and each has a chance of dropping a Fulminated Mercury. It takes as little as 20-30 seconds to kill them, rest, and repeat, and it took me at most 10-15 minutes to get 8 Fulminated Mercury. Note that I did not use Mibu Balloons, so this could go even faster.
- User experience --> Drops from the Cannon enemies in Ashina Depths, near the Poison Pool idol. Appears to be a rare drop, found this out by farming them. Starting from the Poison Pool idol, go up the wall and backstabbing the 1st Cannon enemy. Grappling across the trees to the right of him to the 2nd Cannon enemy and drop kill him. Finally grapple using the closest tree to the right, and you drop behind or close to the 3rd and final Cannon enemy. Grapple up and drop back to the idol, rest, and repeat. Earned 3 in about 3-4 mins
- User experience --> The Cannon enemies before the Gun Fort idol began dropping this after the Guardian Ape Boss was defeated. Multiple farming runs before that produced yellow gunpowder as a rare drop and no Mercury. After the Guardian Ape was defeated, the loot tables seemed to shift, either because of the boss itself, or obtaining the final last prosthetic tool from the Ape but the loot table shifted before the tool was installed. The new loot table seems to provide yellow gunpowder fairly often, & Fulminated Mercury rarely (at about the same rate as yellow gunpowder dropped before defeating the Ape).
- User experience --> Farmable from the ministry soldiers at the ashina castle idol once Ashina is ablaze. Using Mibu possession balloon and golden vortex prosthetic tool, sneak up behind the group of ministry soldiers with golden vortex loaded and unleash the vortex. You probably can do 2-3 runs from the idol on a single possession balloon, and should be able to get at least one fulminated mercury. I was able to farm more than a dozen in <30 minutes using this method.
AnonymousA good farm is at Outskirts Wall - Stairway Idol after returning from Fountainhead. This is on Ministry enemies so there's no updated drop table shenanigans to worry about like at Gun Fort. Killing the Red Guard miniboss is recommended. Have Demon Bell and Mibu Possession balloon active obviously.
* Grapple to the sniper nest above.
* Walk off and backstab the sniper (or just kill him normally if he spots you).
* Walk off and fall into the bushes.
* Backstab the nearest gunman.
* Go through the gate.
* Backstab the nearest gunman.
* Depending on your speed, there should be a patrol of two close or far from you walking towards the bigger gate. If they are separate, eliminate the flamethrower guy first, then the swordsman. Switch the order if they are far, since the flamethrower guy can't fight well up close (or use up a bloodsmoke). If they were really far, you may as well kill the guy beyond the gate as well.
* Grapple to the left side of the burning gate and jump back to the idol.
That's 5-6 enemies per run. One Mibu balloon lasts about 2-3 runs depending on your speed. This might be a good experience/sen grind too, but I didn't run the numbers there.

confirming that the shotgun gunner guy closest to the poison pool idol drops this, with the bell demon active, balloon active, during "evening" and NO senpou skills unlocked. took over 40 kills to get one drop though

Man this is twice now that I've played this game without ever getting this material. Maybe I play the game to quickly or something cause I Definitely beat all the other areas for the palace items before evening or nightfall at least. And I don't remember getting this drop hardly at all. Screw this mercury. Locking me out of the last upgrades cause of this crap.

Either I'm misunderstanding something or the "While farming, you have to have the effect of the Demon Bell ("Sinister Burden") active (...)" in this article is not correct. I just farmed the two gunwielding enemies near the Under-Shrine Valley Idol only using Mibo Possession Balloons (without the Bell being active) and got 4 of them in about 10 minutes.

Once the game has shifted to evening (see https://sekiroshadowsdietwice.wiki.fextralife.com/Time+of+Day), you can farm this from gun fort (I had virtuous deed + demon bell)
If you need some more and it's night (ashina is on fire), golden vortex as noted above gets it rapidly

Didn't need Most Virtuous Deed to get the two Fulminated Mercury I needed within 10-15min, just Virtuous Deed, Demon Bell & Balloon at the Gun Fort.

You don't have to kill the Apes, I have only fought them and the Cannon-types in Gun Fort are dropping this already, rarely. I farmed the area extensively before fighting the Guardian Ape and they never dropped it, now, after just fighting but not defeating the Ape, the items are dropping in the same farming area.....

The trigger for the cannoneers to start dropping cooler things is acquiring the Mortal Blade, not killing the Guardian Ape. Hope this helps

Can somebody change it for 2 for hte purple fume spark? because its only 2 according to my game
easiest farm lategame for this seems to be ashina outskirts - stairway idol (where you fought chained ogre). Spawn after Ashina is on fire, kill the gunner in the tower, drop, kill the guy below, kill the gunner past the gate, then the cannon guy and ds3 dex user. If you want better chances, or some adamantite scrap as well, push forward and farm the rest of the guys in the area you fight the juzou clone. slow, but yields lots of xp, sen, and rare upgrade materials like yellow gunpowder and fulm. mercury and adamantite scrap.

So I can confirm that the cannon guys near the Old Grave at Ashina castle in the towers do indeed drop them alomg with yellow gunpowder. I haven't beaten the Guardian Ape yet but I have the Mortal Blade and the stone withoit Kuro's charm (I honestly don't know how that works or if it helps in that regard) Bell Demon and both levels of good virtue or whatever it's called. It does take a while to get but it does drop from them

The amounts needed for the different upgrades all need updated. Only a couple reflect the actual amounts needed.

These are the correct amounts found on the Prosthetic Tools page in-game. Someone with edit capability needs to fix this.
Got some from Shotgun dudes at Gun Fort Idol. Demon Bell on, Most Virtuous Deeds (lvl2), Genchiro dead, Guardian Ape dead. Bloodsmoke Ninjitsu equipped > Gun Fort Idol > walk up and backstab deathblow the guy > Bloodsmoke > backstab the other shotgunner > walk out > backstab the 3rd shogunner > run back and reset.

This needs editing. Suzaku's Lotus Umbrella only requires 1x Fulminated Mercury to upgrade to, bringing the total needed for all upgrades to 18.

I can confirm that this drop starts from Gun Fort cannon dudes after collecting the flower/stone/mortal blade... & same with Grave Wax from bell taro in Mibu Village. However even with the bell demon and possession balloon it was a ***** and a half to get it to drop like farming Slabs from Darkwariths in the New Londo Ruins in Dark Souls.

Patch 1.04, confirmed dropped from the gunmans ( both the big and small gunman) near Gun Fort Idol with Demon’s Bell actives. Got 4 Fuminated Mercury in 2 runs.

Best tactic is the golden vortex one, spam the***** of out this on the riflemen at ashina castle stairs (ashina castle idol) while they fight the ashina samurais! Got five fulminated mercury in one run!

No luck while farming the two gunmen behind the gunfort idol, NG+ with demon bell and possession balloon active. Was trying it for a solid hour with no results. Beginning to think that you possibly need to be beyond a certain point in the game? Only explanation I can think of excluding ridiculously bad luck.

I was in NG++ (patch 1.04) and did the shura ending so I didn't had access to the "ashina on fire" where most of it is. I had the skill "most virtuous deeds" and the ball active and farmed the guys on gun fort but they never droped it. I activated the bell demon and they started to drop it. So I guess without the bell demon they don't drop this iten. I also used the Golden Vortex and manged to farm the fulminated mercury very fast.

After farming the gunmen by the gunfort idol for 2 hours and 15+ runs I'm pretty sure I can confirm they DO NOT drop without demon bell active. If anyone has had them drop without it and can confirm that it would be greatly appreciated.

Farmed for over 2 hours behind Gun Fort with Demon Bell/Possession Balloon and 0x Fulminated Mercury dropped. Possibly doesn't drop from those mobs as of patch 1.03?

With the demon bell, a mibu balloon and both loot skill in senpou tree I got 2-4 mercury per balloon from doing runs in the Outskirts wall - stairway. Kill the dude in the tower, then the one below and then the one at the gate, climb to the roof and rest. 4-5 runs per balloon

The canon wielder near Old Grave idol drop them when Ashina is overrun. I was using Bell Demon, all skills and Golden Vortex. The one near the building where Blackhat Badger was did drop it for me.
Killed tons of Red Gunmen in Akina Outskirts, no drops...... weird.

Found 1x fulminated mercury in Ashina Outskirts right by where you fight the first ogre after it has been set on fire. I found it in NG+, so if someone could confirm if it's there on a regular NG, then that'd be great.

I am in NG+ at the last boss. I used Demon’s Bell curse and Mibu Possession Balloon, and went to Ashina Depths - Poison Pool. Backstabbed the gunner there and got 3 FM in 4 kills. Might have been crazy-good luck but got it in a matter of minutes.

They drop pretty regularly from the ministry gunmen after getting the dragon tear. If you travel to the ashina outskirts - stairwell idol you can easily stealth kill 5 gunmen in less than a min then rest and repeat. I got 8 in maybe 10 mins or less.

For those interested, the riflemen at the gunfort will drop mercury *before* killing Owl. I have the Bell Demon and Rank 1 Virtuous Deed and they seem to drop it relatively often. I'm talking about five drops in twenty minutes worth of farming.
Just got 2 fulminated mercury to drop (individually) from shotgun enemies in gun fort. I've only fought one battle on top of ashina castle (but the second one is there waiting for me), have the first item drop buff from skill tree, and bell demon buff is active. Shotgun enemies are also dropping yellow gunpowder now, but the mercury seems rarer as I haven't found any until now.

I updated the page on Fort Idol. I have farmed this spot for a prolonged time and never received any Fulminated Mercury. I now killed Owl and went back to farm half a skill point, and two of them dropped in the span of 5 minutes. Proof: (two clips in one, two drops)

Castle Outskirts - Stairway while it's on fire. There are three gunmen and a cannon wielder that drop Fulminated Mercury. One in the tower, one below the tower, one outside the gate, and the cannoneer is walking up the steps. Net experience: ~2700 for the four of them; Net sen (no balloon): ~400. The drop rate is about 7-10%.

1. Ashina Castle idol after it's on fire. // 2. Equip Golden Vortex (fan upgrade). // 3. Pop balloon item+. // 4. Run to the stairs and use fan at the first steps, run up towards the middle of the 4~ enemies and use the Golden Vortex trying to hit as many as possible. // 5. In case you were confused, both the large gunmen (with the big multi-guns) and the small gunmen (with the little stick guns) drop this item. Therefore it is worthwhile to kill both of them on your way.

If you don't have access to the lategame yet.You can get some from the Under-Shrine Valley bonfire. Just turn around and grapple into a platform with 2 of them, can easily backstab and kill 2 gunmen there. They mostly drop Black Powder and Antidotes, but you can get Mercury and Yellow Powder from these guys too. Best done with Demon Bell and Temple arts drop rate buffs.

Gunfort is best place combo with Bell Demon and Golden Vortex and if u want drop more use mibu possession ballon more appear fulminated. just kill 2 cannonball and go rest and do that reapeatle

I found it by going to the Gun Fort Idol in Sunken Valley, backtracking to the gun shooting guys, and killing everyone on the cliff. Dropped from the guys easy to kill ones, no idea how rare but got two fairly quickly with a fortune balloon active.

You can find fulminated mercury in Ashina Castle. Ashina Castle idol and up the stairs. Nearly halfway to the right it will be on the ground. It can also be dropped by the red hooded samurai but I think it’s a rare drop
