Mibu Village, go right, water in front of the merchant, if you continue right, there is interior shinobi you can backstab. Probably best to use gachiin waterfall. Shinobi gives incredible amounts of fat wax.

There are 3 tools missing from this list. The Aged Feather Mist Raven also need 1 Fat Wax Lump, the Mountain Echo Whistle needs 2 more and the Malcontent an additional 4.
The total number of tumors you need to find is 40 for all upgrades.

If you have the demon bell rung you can get about 1 every time you kill all the monks(pre genichiro).so it great for early upgrades like phantom kunia

It doesn't say it on the "Where to find" section so figured Id write here - I just got one randomly drop at Ashina Reservoir by the annoying gong hitting guy next to where you find the spear. Have Screenshot to confirm if needed. Its prob a very low % drop rate, since in dozens of playthroughs this is the first time I noticed getting one from this type of enemy. He was the only one I killed and looted so it couldn't have been anyone else that dropped it.
Sorry for the long explanation, just wanted it to be clear I guess

Are we basically using cancerous lumps to upgrade weapons? IS this what's it come down to fromsoft?

If you are end game, go Senpou. I need fat wax specifically for the Malcontent whistle for a final boss. Senpou Temple monks got whatchu need. Have the demon bell rung, and use Ceremonial Tanto + Golden Vortex to spirit away some monks and get double the items. Killing the Mibu flute players, even though fast, has too low a drop rate. The monks drop a lot more.

I gotten it to drop from the Loneshadow next to the Mibu Village Idol. Not sure how rare it is from him though. Dropped one on first kill with demon bell. I’ve killed him about ten times with both bell and Possession Ballon, only got one more so far.

These are likely tumors based on the description. In which case the grave wax would be a tumor that outgrew its blood supply and started necrotizing on the inside making it black. The enemies you kill that drop them then probably have some sort of exposure to a carcinogen since they start dropping grave wax later in the game, implying progression of the disease.
Okay so I love your wiki thanks. Mibu village has these green orbs by the graves the enemies respawn out of. I think souls 2 had that place you used your weapon to destroy torches, wonder if it's the same with the green orbs.

Best place IMO to farm BOTH Grave Wax and Fat Wax is "Flower Viewing Stage Idol" in Fountainhead. Right behind you is one of those super easy to kill blue piper guys and he's set up for a backstab. Just use a Posession/Wealth balloon and kill him repeatedly. If you want double the chance at items and double the gold, use Golden Vortex fan(and the Ceremonial Tanto will keep you not using spirit things.) This guy drops both, at good drop rates, and giving decent money and EXP too.

you can farm the vilagers that live on the mibu vilage, where there is giants with big bells on a chain, little guys that get 1 hit kill, you can use the orb to increase the item drop rate, and then kill like 30 of them in 1 minute, this way you will farm some gold, exp and if lucky enough you should get some wax

Drop rate increases dramatically after you kill the boss at the end of the Senpou temple area and obtain the "spoiler" They will drop about 33% of the time off of the regular monk enemies in the Senpou Temple area

The old ladies at the top of the castle (where the samurais are) can drop wax, but it's a rare drop

Enemies sitting down at Main Hall Idol in Senpou Temple drop Lump of Fat Wax.

You get x3 Lump of Fat Wax if you decide lure Jinzaemon Kumano down to the Abandoned Dungeon after receiving Surgeon's Bloody Letter from Doujun.
This is straight up bodyfat.
